Fall 2022

Teaching Reading and Writing to Intermediate and Advanced Learners of English (EDUC 655) – This course analyzes theories, research, and approaches to teaching writing to second-language learners at the intermediate and advanced level. Included are discussions of academic, professional and creative writing; cultural contrasts in rhetorical styles and tradition; and the use of fanfiction writing projects. It also incorporates materials developed as part of the FanTALES project for the teaching of multilingual interactive digital storytelling. This class is taught in a hybrid format with 40% of class meetings on campus and 60% online in a synchronous format.

Second Language Acquisition (EDUC 670) -This course covers current theories of how second language is learned, providing participants a greater understanding of the processes involved in language acquisition and how English language learners’ (ELL’s) personal characteristics influence this process. In addition to this theoretical foundation, this class also incorporates a virtual exchange with partner classes at Malmö University in Sweden and Tel Aviv University in Israel with a focus on diversity and inclusion in TESOL/English teaching.  This class is taught in an asynchronous online format with optional one hour synchronous online mentoring sessions offered weekly.

Technology, Language & Intercultural Communication (EDUC 673) – Also referred to as the CALL course (computer-assisted language learning), this course introduces students to research and a range of practical applications related to the use and influence of technology on language teaching and use and intercultural communication. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the increased role of technology-mediated teaching, this version of the course also incorporated links to recent online talks and workshops regarding the pandemic and its influence on teaching and research in these areas.
